THE PROJECT
FACELESS is a transformative photography and storytelling art project dedicated to providing a sanctuary for survivors of sexual violence. Spearheaded by Sacramento-based photographer and curator, Sarah Marie Hawkins, the project serves as a platform for a myriad of emotions—ranging from re-birth, grief, and growth to healing, anger, love, and release. Each poignant portrait and narrative captured by Sarah Marie is a testament to the resilience and courage of survivors, all while maintaining their anonymity.
THE MISSION
The heart of FACELESS lies in its unwavering commitment to document the intricate and complex journeys of healing that each survivor embarks on. Through capturing candid, honest imagery and first-hand accounts, the project aspires to amplify the voices of survivors, initiate conversations, and foster a community where individuals can freely share and heal.
FACELESS is the first art project funded by Planned Parenthood Mar Monte’s Tanuja Bahal Artist-in-Residence (AiR) program. This project-based residency aims to further the discourse around sexual and reproductive health, and it aligns seamlessly with the core principles of FACELESS.
